This week's meeting featured Eric Fawcett, Owner and Executive Producer of Egg Music, a company that produces original music and licensing for advertising, film, and TV. Departmental Responsibilities

• Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications to develop a departmental communications and media plan for the 2013-2014 academic year
• Develop a streamlined process by which all URW programs submit requests for website additions and revisions
• Maintain the URW website content and social media strategy on a daily basis
• Establish a communications plan for internal URW communications
• Write scripts for various video productions throughout the year

Specific Responsibilities

• Manage all Recreational Sports social media accounts on a daily basis
• Serve as the main student contact with the Minnesota Daily, Housing and Residential Life, Office for Student Affairs, and Student Unions and Activities to establish a stronger campus presence
• Work with DRS membership staff to develop monthly newsletters for the purpose of internal and external departmental communications which highlight upcoming events, program opportunities and other pertinent Recreation and Wellness issues
• Communicate departmental events to the University community through communications programs such as UM Brief, UM Events Calendar, myU portal, Undergraduate Update, and all internal social networking sites

Required Qualifications
All student employees are required to be trained in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:

• Must be a full time student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities
• Must be able to work 15-20 hours per week
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work in team-based, collaborative settings
• Extensive knowledge and interest in social networking sites for business purposes
• A self-starter willing work both independently and in a team setting
• Highly organized and detail oriented

Preferred Qualifications

• Seeking a degree in strategic communications, mass communication, marketing, sport management, or a related field
• Experience with acquiring ad space through various outlets such as newspapers, magazines, websites, and social media platforms
• Familiarity with (or interest in learning about) graphic design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
• Knowledge of the University of Minnesota brand standards

Is it second semester already?

Can you believe the first Ad Club meeting of second semester is already upon us? Looking back on our successful first semester, I have no doubt the next few months will fly by with more awesome tours, insightful speakers and social events!

Last semester, Ad Club was lucky enough to have a variety of speakers come in to share their unique experiences within the industry. These speakers also provided us with some much needed insider tips and tricks, all in an attempt to give underclassmen a leg up and upperclassmen some confidence and knowledge of what to expect in the exciting field they will soon be entering!

Our speakers ranged from an alumni panel of recent grads who shared their “new employee” perspective, to groups from Preston Kelly and Campbell Mithun, to Periscope’s experiential marketing guru (and Ad Club alum!) Carter Jensen, to Nick Bryant and Katrina Wollet from the growing digital shop, Spyder Trap. But that’s not all! We can’t forget the fun and memorable presentation the ladies from Ginger Consulting brought us, or the opportunity offered by the Brand Lab. David from CLA Career Services presented some excellent resume and interview tips and Rob and Davo from Gage gave us an inside look into the advertising and marketing worlds.

Agency tours on Friday afternoons gave Ad Club an excuse to escape campus and venture into downtown Minneapolis. We toured Preston Kelly, Olson, Duffy & Partners, Campbell Mithun and Periscope. In November we had the chance to act as “Interns for a Day” at Risdall.

This semester we also had some fun outside the classroom and agencies. Celebrating Halloween with a special meeting at Sally’s restaurant, following up our tour at PK with a group dinner at Tugg’s, and even creating our own instagram account (follow us at UMNAdClub)!

Last, but certainly not least, a group of 25 Ad Clubbers made their way to the Windy City to explore Chicago’s vibrant advertising scene. We visited with panel of ad experts at both Havas Worldwide Chicago and DDB Chicago, went inside the mind of the famous David Olgilvy at Ogilvy Chicago, explored the Chicago Portfolio School and climbed through a tree house in the middle of Red Frog Events space! Not to mention getting our fill of deep dish pizza, shopping on Miracle Mile, and making our way to Wrigleyville and Navy Pier! A big thanks to Alyx and Laura for planning!

Fall semester proved to one to remember, and we can’t wait to see what this semester will bring! Thanks to everyone who made our fall semester great!

4. Start thinking about joining us on our trip to Chicago. Alyx and I are planning a trip for the winter (learn more about this at our first meeting!) to bring members the opportunity to tour agencies in another market. This opened my eyes to a whole new community and helped many people realize it might be a place they want to go. If nothing else, it’s a great opportunity to network and there’s no way you’ll leave without new knowledge and a whole lot of fun.

5. Don’t stress, but be aggressive. The energy you put in is exactly what you’ll get out of it. An internship isn’t going to fall right into your lap and you will have to work for it- but that’s all part of the learning process. Be passionate and remember that this is going to get you exactly where you want to go.

Taking place on October 3rd at the New World Stages in New York City, this event was created by the One Club to provide concrete, real world solutions to the lack of diversity in advertising.

This event will provide young aspiring advertising professionals, such as students, with an invaluable opportunity for to sit in on panels that share the personal insights of some of the industries top professionals and shed light onto the current state of the industry, network, get their books reviewed and hopefully walk away with a mentor and job/internship opportunities! The participants from our 2011 session vouch for this with results that include 14 internships, 11 jobs and countless important connections formed.

This event is 100% free for students and recent graduates. The day’s scheduled events include:

1.     Portfolio reviews (spaces limited and assigned on a first come, first serve basis)
2.     Networking sessions with some of the industries top professionals
3.     A career section where participants can meet recruiters from agencies and portfolio schools
4.     Panel Discussions
5.     And, finally the Live Talent Pitch, a unique opportunity for specially chosen participants to "sell" themselves to an audience and a special jury   of agency recruiters and industry executives on stage

This summer, I was fortunate enough to land an internship in Minneapolis at a local marketing agency. This opportunity was sincerely one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life and it truly developed my passion for the art of advertising and marketing. Unlike many internship positions, my experience did not consist of coffee runs, copying papers, and answering phone calls. Instead, I was put to work right away and was even expected to present my thoughts and ideas at a client meeting on my second day on the job!  Needless to say, I am extremely satisfied with all of the effort I put into my internship throughout the summer and the experiences and knowledge that I got out of it in the end.

Although I obviously still do not know everything about the industry, I’d like to share a few key takeaways that I learned and found important to share with my fellow SJMC acquaintances.

1.) It’s not always glamorous. It really isn’t, but that’s not to discourage you! There were always times when I was intensely working a project that was due in an hour when my boss would throw me in the deep end with sharks and assign me another task. Multitasking is extremely important in the advertising industry and from my experience, I don’t think that there will ever be a time where you are only working on one deadline.

2.) Have a sense of humor. It will help if you know how to crack a joke and take sarcasm with ease. This industry can become extremely stressful, but being able to laugh and smile will take some pressure off of your shoulders.

3.) Be prepared to re-do, re-think, and re-evaluate. Usually your first idea isn’t the winner and chances are the second, third, and fourth idea might not work either! Don’t become discouraged though…it’s normal! Creativity is meant to be a working process.

4.) Treat every client the same; give it all you got! I realized that there are some clients I prefer over others because their marketing strategies are more fun to work with! However, your company is being paid to always be giving 110% to each client. Find something unique about each client that will motivate you to appreciate and work hard for them.

5.) Always accept a challenge. Whether you’re competitive or not, always accept a challenge. Throughout my internship, I was challenged with using new software, marketing tactics, and vocabulary. I was told to first try everything on my own and if I could not figure it out, ask a specific question. I found it extremely beneficial to keep an open mind and attempt to complete tasks on my own first instead of getting let off the hook.

These are just a few of the many things that I learned through my experience this summer. I would love to hear what YOU learned through an internship experience too!

In the world of social media these shapes symbolize the communication between a brand and its followers. Advertising is all about getting the message to the consumer through conversation. Furthermore, these shapes can represent the fantastic guest speakers or even networking, as it is so important in this industry.”

During my junior year, I participated in the mentorship program through SJMC. The mentorship program pairs journalism students with business professionals in the area the student is interested in, whether it is account, creative, or as specific as digital media. I could not be more grateful for my mentorship experience. Not only did it allow me to establish a better idea of what to expect from a career in advertising, but I was also able to meet several bright minds within the industry who were contributors to my path-finding experience. Not only do I encourage all future juniors and seniors to participate in the program, but I thought I would share some valuable nuggets as well:

1.       Minimize your stress level – your surroundings don’t worry about you nearly as much as you worry about yourself

2.       Do it well, or don’t do it at all

3.       Consume as much media as you possibly can

4.       Explore agency cultures – make a list of what you want in a workplace

5.       Be a sponge – everywhere!

6.       Be humble

7.       Always have an opinion on current market trends

8.       Network, network, network – I cannot stress this enough!

9.       Most importantly – take time to have fun! College is your time to discover who you are and the people you surround yourself with reflects that.

If you do decide to apply for the mentorship program in the fall, remember that you will teach your mentor just as much as you will learn from them. After the initial introduction, the partnership is what you make it. I highly recommend all juniors and seniors apply this coming year if you have not already participated in the program. I am looking forward to a great last (but not least) year with Ad Club!

Sometimes the best way to learn about something is to just jump in and get your hands dirty.  Like most advertising students, I’ve spent this summer interning with hopes of being better prepared for the real world after graduation.   I am currently a Client Services Intern at an advertising agency that specializes in loyalty marketing and have enjoyed getting to experience the advertising world first hand.

Starting out I was extremely nervous that I wasn’t prepared enough to be an intern.  After a few minor bumps in the road; one being that I got locked in a stairwell my first week (this actually happened!), it has been a truly priceless learning experience.  While it isn’t over yet, overall I couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend a summer.  For what it’s worth, here are some things I learned throughout my internship…

 1.  Never say no to more work.  Especially as an intern you need to be willing to help and take on extra work, even if it means working later.  If you’re bored, don’t just sit around and wait for your supervisor to assign projects to you, actively seek out more projects.  Your supervisors will appreciate your desire and initiative.

  2.  Learn how to handle change.  Dealing with constant changes during my work days was tricky for me at first because my overly-organized self likes to have my day clearly planned out.  Now, I'm better at expecting things to change, and learning how to stay calm when the unexpected happens. 

 3.  You need to be able to work with all types of people.  This is self-explanatory, but if you’re going to meet a project deadline you need to make sure that your team can work together and communicate well.  You just cannot have an attitude in this industry.  I am so impressed by the talented individuals I have met through my internship that are down to earth and generous even though they are high on the totem pole.  If you want people to enjoy working with you, don’t act like they are lucky to be doing so.  As interns, WE are the lucky ones.

 4.  Clients are people too (just very important people).  The first time I had a client call I was so nervous that I would say something wrong and lose the account.  Someone I worked with reminded me that clients are people too, and just like us, are trying to do their jobs well.  While we still need to work hard to make clients happy, it is always a comforting reminder to me that the client is working towards the same goal as us – a successful project.

 5.  The Account Manager sets the mood of the project for the entire team.  As an Account Manager if you act stressed and frustrated with the project it will likely rub off on the rest of your team.  Try to keep your emotions in check throughout the process of managing a project.

 In closing, I strongly urge everyone who is on the fence about taking an internship to go for it!  Even if it means being busier or having less free time, you will be amazed at all the interesting people you will meet and industry knowledge you will learn.  Also, remember it is never too early to start looking for internships!  If you’re lost at where to start; check out Ad Club’s job board: http://umnadclub.com/jobs-2/

As one who is bit hesitant to change, rebranding is a difficult concept for me to accept. But change is important, as my mom likes to say: “Getting older is better than the alternative!”

As an intern with the growing and recently rebranded marketing firm, Bluewater Inc., I’ve been able to see correlations between Bluewater’s changes and the changes Ad Club has undergone and is still undergoing. Similar to Bluewater, I feel like Ad Club has been on a bit of a rebranding journey.

The suggestion to take a company, or club in a new direction is easy, but through my time with Bluewater, I now understand that the execution is not so simple. Where do you even begin? Attempting to maneuver an established company or group to new territory is daunting. It’s definitely a risk. But it can be a risk that more than pays off. Just look at one of these 10 Most Successful Rebranding Campaigns!

So how did Bluewater (and how can Ad Club) make changes successfully?

• Don’t let change scare you
  • Be ready, willing and able to let go of the old and embrace the new.
• Have a goal
  • Know where you want to go and make it a mission; become the James Bond of the revamp world
    
    
• Invite others on the rebranding journey
  • Whether it be a Launch Party (like Bluewater) to celebrate the transition or a Logo Redesign competition (like Ad Club à submit your design ideas to info@umnadclub.com!) bringing others onboard enhances awareness and investment in the change.

 Having tripled its members from when I first joined Ad Club in 2010 to its commitment to new ideas and events (Prepare yourselves for Chicago round 2!), I have no doubts that Ad Club will only continue to grow and successfully make the necessary changes.

There are a lot of things ad students think about their future careers at an agency, whether it’s playing ping pong in the office, sitting in on glamorous photo shoots, or posting up at a desk with feet in the air waiting for the next big idea to strike.

As an ad student with account exec aspirations, I certainly realized that the days of three martini client lunches were long gone, but I still had a lot to learn going into this summer.

As a plucky young marketing intern at a boutique local agency, I quickly learned – scratch that, am still learning – about all the effort that goes into the execution of a campaign and how the industry actually works. Sure, a lot of the stories are true. Clients really do ask for the logo to be bigger (I heard it in my third client meeting), emails do in fact come in faster than you can respond to them, and the occasional co-worker happy hour is alive and well.

That being said, there were a lot of things that came as a shock. The world of budget reconciliation, expense reports, advancing, and managing vendor relationships were all very new to me. They certainly don’t teach you how to track down and re-route a missing shipment while you’re sitting in JOUR 3201. Yeah, I had heard words like “cash flow” and “request for proposal” thrown around, but I’ve learned that you really don’t have an understanding of how it all fits together until you’re doing it yourself.

About two weeks into my internship, my supervisor pulled me into a conference room to chat about how everything was going so far, specifically if everything was meeting my expectations. I told her that, while I loved what I was doing, it was very different than I expected it to be. She replied, “Yeah, coming out of college, being an account executive seemed so sexy. I thought that I was just going to be giving awesome presentations and winning business. Execution is not so simple.” That has to be the most valuable lesson I’ve learned so far. Execution is not so simple.

Getting an internship has opened my eyes to everything that actually goes on into the amazing industry we’re all striving to be a part of. As I’m wrapping this up, I’m thinking back to last year when my experience largely consisted of sitting in a classroom ooh-ing and aah-ing over cool case studies. With only two-and-a-half short months as an intern in the frantic world of marketing communications, I realize how much hair was probably lost making those come to life. You know what I think now? Worth every follicle.

My first year in Advertising Club:

To all of those who have taken the initiative to go to your first Ad Club meeting: Congrats!  You may have made one of the best decisions in your life.  It may have changed your major, career path, or professional goals.  Luckily, I stepped my foot in the door of my first meeting one year ago, and I can promise you that my life has changed.

It may be a little intimidating, you may not know anyone, and you may not have anywhere to sit (we’re working on that), but you will be sure to make at least one new friend.  For goodness sake, this club is made up of some of the most outgoing people on campus who are experts in networking, relationship building, and risk taking. We work hard and play hard.  There’s nothing better than busting your butt all week at Murphy hall and meeting up with your Ad Club buddies for a Friday tour and going out to social events and dinner afterward.  We’re just practicing for the real world of advertising right?

Opportunities from my personal experience as an Ad Club member:

Previous exec board member, Carter Jensen once told the members of Ad Club that one day, someone in Ad Club or someone you met at an Ad Fed or MIMA networking event will be the one reaching out to you and giving you your first break into the advertising industry.  I found it hard to believe that a club could impact my life in that way.  Until Carter was that exact person who gave me an opportunity to be a Brand Ambassador for Periscope.  Joining Ad Club and the experience you gain through Ad Club connections will boost your resume and give you a greater presence in the agency world.

Most importantly what I have learned as an Ad Club member is to be resilient.  Every speaker has in some way mentioned this.  Success, especially in advertising, is not a straight path, but a winding one.  The speakers openly share their experiences in pursuing their goals in advertising and it is encouraging, but at the same time frightening.  You have to be ready to bounce back from any setbacks.  You have to be passionate.

Hi Ad Club! 

We hope everyone is having a good week! First off- for anyone who is planning on attending the tour at Spyder Trap this Friday, please RSVP by the end of day on Wednesday.  We think they are providing snacks, and would like to know an estimated number.  The tour is this Friday the 13th at 2:00PM. 

On Wednesday, April 25th we will be voting for next year's executive board and chair positions.  Everyone should plan on attending as we would like to take a group picture (for SJMC Spring Showcase) and there will be food! Here is a list of positions, descriptions and instructions on how to run, read thoroughly: 

Executive Board:

1.  President

• Organize overall schedule and direction of Ad Club throughout the entire year
• Lead all weekly meetings and agency tours
• Manage the entire Executive Board team and leads

2.  Vice President

• Assist the President with any responsibilities/tasks listed above
• Responsible for registering Ad Club with SUA at beginning of the year

3.  Secretary 

• Responsible for maintaining the primary Ad Club email account ( info@umnadclub.com)
• Send out weekly emails (including recaps, reminders, agency tour sign-ups, etc.)
• Take notes during weekly meetings and tours 
• Respond to all interested member requests

4.  Treasurer 

• Responsible for all financial activity of the Ad Club account
• Collect and track membership dues at the beginning of fall and spring semester
• Register members with Ad Fed
• Apply for grants 
• In charge of ordering food (for weekly meetings or events) and supplies (such as thank-you cards, postage stamps, t-shirts, etc.)

Chairs:

5.  Event Planning Chair *New!

• Lead of event planning needs assigned by Executive Board
• Events include (but not limited to): winter break Chicago trip, end of year celebration, fundraising events, social events (happy hour, non-Ad Fed networking events, etc).

6.  Social Media Chair

• Lead and maintain all social media activity and outlets including Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, Blog and Ad Club website
• Assign weekly blog content and contributors
• Responsible for taking pictures during all meetings, tours and events
• Create/suggest new social media platforms for Ad Club to partake in (Ex. Pinterest?)
• Compile weekly analytics and send to Executive Board each week

7.  Ad Club Agency Chair *New!

• Serve as the Director of Verge Agency
• Responsible for organizing elections for agency leads start of fall semester
• Meet with agency leads on a weekly basis
• Manage new business and communicate agency news to the Executive Board and conduct bi-weekly Verge updates at Ad Club meetings.
• Work with agency leads to successfully brand and promote Verge

**REQUIREMENTS**

• Must be a registered student both fall AND spring semester of next year
• Must be a current PAID Ad Club Member
• Must be in Minneapolis all year (cannot study abroad and hold a position)
• Must be able to attend weekly Wednesday meetings and the majority of Friday tours
• Must attend some of the Ad Fed events throughout the year

- Download "application" from the email sent to you from info@umnadclub.com, fill it out, and email that AND a photo back to info@umnadclub.com BY WEDNESDAY APRIL 18th. *If you did not get this document please request it via email – info@umnadclub.com

- MUST be in attendance during election date (4/25) and present answers from application (will be shown in powerpoint). Exception: those who are studying abroad. (IF you are studying abroad currently, be sure to let us know!)

- Can only run for one position. (However, those running for President can also run for VP, if not elected).
